Introduction Assessing the feasibility of developing a strong biofuel industry around biomass feedstock requires a comprehensive evaluation of agronomic, environmental, social and economic factors. An encompassing assessment of the sustainability of biomass production as a feedstock for a developing bioenergy sector is complex due to the multiple dimensions involved in a complete evaluation of its social, technological and economic factors. The current trend of rising fossil fuel prices and observed climate change, and other adverse environmental and societal impacts of energy use make the exploration for more sustainable ways to use energy more important than ever (Kowalski et-al., 2009). According to Hill et-al. (2006) for biofuels derived from crops to be a viable alternative they should:

Lignocellulosic biomass feedstock transportation bridges biomass production, transformation, and conversion into a complete bioenergy system. Transportation and associated logistics account for a major portion of the total feedstock supply cost and energy consumption, and therefore improvements in transportation can substantially improve the cost-competitiveness of the bioenergy sector as a who...

In the last few decades, finding alternatives to fossil fuels has become a hot issue across all international frontiers. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has shed light on the feasibility of using biofuels to meet the growing energy demand as well as to reduce CO2 emissions which are a major cause of global warming, especially in the transportation sector. The...

Availability of and access to useful energy is a crucial factor for maintaining and improving human well-being. Looming scarcities and increasing awareness of environmental, economic, and social impacts of conventional sources of non-renewable energy have focused attention on renewable energy sources, including biomass. The complex interactions of social, economic, and ecological factors among ...
